Our outpatient ENT clinic has had to reduce our patient load *significantly* and is now only seeing maybe 10 patients a day (give or take) in person. A lot of Telehealth visits. With the decreased patient load comes decreased kids coming through the doors. “Elective” and “semi urgent” surgeries cancelled or postponed. Decreased access to healthcare for patients. Lost revenue and funding. Lack of PPE. With that comes difficult decisions, and I am now furloughed indefinitely until the virus is contained, until we can increase our patient load and until we have more PPE for the safety of our staff and for our patients. •
Being deemed “nonessential” is about as difficult for me as it was for the docs who had to make that decision for our clinic. There have been so many conversations recently about how healthcare doesn’t stop in the midst of a pandemic. On Instagram, Forums, Facebook pages, between the docs at my clinic, etc. People still need access to healthcare. Kids still need someone to meet them and their feelings where they are and guidance in coping with the stress and trauma that can come with medical experiences. •
To all my child life friends still working- I’m sending you all my love. You are valid. Your work is important. •
To the nurses, doctors, tech, and more thank you for doing everything you can to help us combat this virus and everything it impacts. •
To the students whose practicums, internships and volunteer hours have been halted, I’m here. We will all get through this. •
Stay home if you can. Stay safe if you can’t.
